Trainer Spotlight: Alex Giannini & Leslie Bartlett

Alex and Leslie both experienced something that most dancers and cheerleaders only dream of…they represented the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders at this year’s Super Bowl LI!! They each have over 20 years of experience dancing but they say this last year was definitely a “dream come true.” As part of the original SculptSquad, Alex and Leslie share a little bit about their lives inside the studio, on the field and how they balance it all!

This past season you were both line captains; what was it like leading the team all the way to the Super Bowl? And what was it like cheering there?!

LB: My first season on the team, we only won four games, so being a part of the organization during a Super Bowl year was mind blowing… being a captain requires a lot of time, patience, and organization that had me stretched thin, but overall, too happy to even care in the madness. When I first walked on the field in Houston, I honestly just teared up. Okay, maybe I actually cried because not only had the Falcons come so far, but also because of how far my team and I had come from where we started! I 100% believe ATL is on the rise, and we’ll be back!
AG: This past season, I achieved two of my greatest goals in one season – to be a Captain and to cheer in a Super Bowl! I gained a greater understanding, respect, and admiration for my coaches and my previous captains. There is so much work, in practice and outside of practice, that goes in to making sure this squad looks picture perfect come Game Day. All the hard work, sweat, and tears hit the cumulative point the moment I stepped on that Super Bowl field. The energy was magnetic, the fans were so incredibly pumped that our Falcons and our city was being magnified on the largest stage in the world – it’s such a great honor to have gotten a taste of a Super Bowl experience. I have a great feeling about the Falcons making another Super Bowl run in the near future.

Has the SH method helped to keep you in shape in and off season?

LB: The SH method is a killer workout that is great for both off-season when we’re prepping for auditions and in-season! I love how the megaformer (M3) crafts long lean muscles with some flexibility elements that are vital in dance. I’ve struggled with a lot of injuries throughout my dance life, and the slow, controlled motions on the M3 help me keep everything aligned correctly while strengthening my weak spots. The curve is awesome to keep cardio up, especially when we’re running the length of a football field to get into formations and are on our feet for 4+ hours trying to keep the energy up!
AG: The strengthening, toning, and flexibility provided by the M3 combined with the cardio on the Curve helps with my endurance and stamina – both instrumental in keeping in dancing and performance shape.

What’s your favorite thing about being part of the SculptSquad?

LB: I love that being a part of the SculptSquad has really connected me to the fitness community in Atlanta. My fellow instructors are so knowledgeable about what they do, and I feel like I’ve really learned a lot from them.
AG: Being around these incredible women who motivate and encourage me to be my best not only as a trainer, but in my own personal physical fitness, and jobs outside of SculptHouse is the best part. Atlanta Falcons is comprised of what we call WOW women, who have it together in all aspects of their lives – the women of SculptHouse are of a similar caliber, and I love being a part of this team and family. They say you are the company you keep, and I’m so happy to be a part of the incredible group of women who make up our SculptSquad!

Favorite Curve block? Favorite M3 move?

LB: Favorite curve block: 2-3-2-4’s. Favorite M3 move: Reverse Kneeling Crunch…but I like 2 yellow springs to really burn it out

AG: I love any block where I am running the majority of the 5 minutes like Up Downs 2 or any
other endurance block. My favorite M3 moves are any types of crunches, sexy bicep curls and
the ripcord!

How do you keep your energy up on those long days with a full time job, teaching at
SH and cheering?

LB: I’ve had plenty of days where I teach a 6 am, go to my full-time job as a senior supply chain
analyst, and then go straight to workouts and practice until 10 pm. I HAVE to make sure I get a
lot of sleep the night before, and I schedule myself a day in the week (usually Fridays) to just go
home and nap and recover after work. It’s not so bad as I go throughout the day because I
really enjoy every job I do and that’s the key to good energy.

AG: COFFEE – I swear! But in all honesty, it’s about taking each task as a separate one before
moving on to the next. Time management is KEY and vital to getting everything done in my life.
I try to tackle each task thrown my way with a smile, give it my complete and undivided
attention so I know I’ve done my absolute best work, and then move on to the next.

What do you keep in your gym/cheer bags?

LB: About a million ponytail holders and bobby pins if I’m just working out. If I’m going
to practice, I definitely have red lip stain…even practices mean hair must be fully
done and makeup looking glam!

AG: WATER!! Crystal light packets, a snack – usually a Quest Bar! Hair ties, mascara, chapstick
or our famous Falcons red lipstick, hairbrush, hairspray, perfume. All the girly essentials!

Member Spotlight: Leeron Ofer

How long have you been coming to SculptHouse?
Since August 2016. Started with 1-2 times a week, now I am an avid goer of 4, sometimes 5 a week!

How is the SH method different form other group classes you’ve taken?
I’ve tried CrossFit, personal training, and several other group fitness classes before. After my first SH class I felt like part of the family right away! The class size is small and intimate which means that clients get the one on one personal attention and motivation to keep going. The energy you feel the second you walk into any class from the amazing, outgoing, and professional trainers is something I have never felt before walking into any other gym or studio. SH has taught me how to listen to my body while working my slow-twitch fat burning muscles and how important it is to focus on form rather than simply trying to “rep it out.” I’m truly addicted!

You’ve seen some incredible changes in your body since starting at SculptHouse! What is the biggest change?
The biggest change is in my waist line and lower body!! I have gone down about a size and a half since starting at Sculpthouse. I can proudly say I have never loved my body so much and after seeing those results, it’s that kind of proof that keeps me coming back to continue to sculpt and change the shape of my body.

What would you tell someone hesitant to try something completely new and unique?
Don’t mock it till you try it! Getting yourself out of your comfort zone is something everyone should try and try often; it’s good for the soul and you’ll never know what you will discover or accomplish! 

What’s your favorite Megaformer move? Favorite Curve block?
Favorite M3 move is anything involving the core! If I had to choose, it would be teaser, or plank to pike. I feel my abs and core so deeply. For the Curves, definitely Skate the World! From someone that used to hate cardio I enjoy mixing up the workout and not straight running. 

You struggled with a knee injury recently. How is SculptHouse helping to recover and strengthen so that you can continue to work out? 
I discussed my knee pain and concern right away with the trainers – I felt comfortable knowing that there would be no judgement if I had to stop or modify a movement. I was worried I would have to stop coming to the StrengthSculpt, full body classes. However, the highly trained trainers have kept a close eye on me and have helped me make adjustments whether it be reducing the resistance, changing range of motion or suggesting alternative exercises. The attention to detail, motivation and high energy keeps me going every time and I’ve been able to strengthen the muscles around my joints to become stronger without further injuring myself. 

What’s your favorite thing about the House and the SculptSquad?
The energy, motivation, friendliness and professionalism of the trainers and everyone that works there! Oh, and the amazing boutique definitely makes the House unique and special! 

Anything else you want to add?
Showing up is the first step to becoming a better version of yourself. Eat clean, work hard and enjoy the results! Thank you, SH for making me feel part of the SculptSquad! See you at the House!

Member Spotlight: Pietro Gianni

Pietro Gianni is not only a SculptHouse member but also our next door neighbor as co-owner of Storico Fresco – “a true Italian Alimentari e Ristorante!” Pietro has been coming 3-4 times a week for the past two months and his results are pretty amazing. Here he is to tell you his story and how SculptHouse has helped change his body and fitness level:

As a restaurant owner you probably have a very busy schedule! How do you fit your workouts in?
I tend to rotate my schedule around my fitness classes, not the other way around, as that’s the priority. SH’s app is so easy to use, I can book my classes and make sure early on there are no conflicts with work. I always tell everyone to book their classes the week prior and stick to them as much as possible.

What is it about SculptHouse that changed you from a class-by-class client to an unlimited member? How has SH changed your body?
SH is addictive! The results come so quickly, especially working where I lacked training most such as core and lower back, that was a quick fix to my personal issues. Becoming an unlimited member was a natural solution, going 3 to 4 times a week made it a no brainer to choose that package, also I don’t ever stress about how many classes I take and being an unlimited member motivates me to go more than ever.

How do you stay in such great shape with all of that Italian food (and wine!) around you all day?
Good question!! I was quite heavier a few years back and learned to eat several small meals through the day. Working inside a restaurant environment doesn’t allow for the classic 2 meals a day anyways, so I’ll eat at 8 and 11am, then a light late lunch after lunch service, again a small dinner on the early side and a healthy snack before bed. That keeps my metabolism always active, and yes, a couple glasses of wine a day is part of the reason why Italians hold such longevity records!!

What would you tell another guy about his hesitation to try SculptHouse?
Guys this is an amazing and very complete work-out!! SH allows for everyone to get to your “sweet spot” pretty quickly. Adding both Megaformer springs and harder Curve running objectives to your personal needs as you progress is very satisfying. While SH is mostly frequented by very fit ladies, we guys also need firmer booties, hind legs and being a bit more “ripped”, which never hurt anyone!!

How is the SculptHouse method different than any other group class you’ve experienced?
The main difference for me is the core exercises. I’ve never experience such a dramatic change in my lower chest to glut areas with other workouts. The real benefit of SH is balance, you get the right exercise in all those smaller muscles we ignore in our regular running or gym exercises and it shows very fast.

What is your favorite M3 move? Favorite Curve block?
My favorite M3 move is anything that regards core (abs, lats, planks, etc.) mostly mermaids where I have discovered parts of my body that I simply didn’t know were there at all! As for the Curve, especially with the recent “upgrade” in levels, being a runner I . Whether it’s active recovery or level 1 I’m jogging lightly, never walking, level 2 is a solid run, level 3 is running at my top speed, and finally level 4 is give it all you have for those few seconds! My favorite Curve block is the 20 second interval 2’s, 3’s and 4’s.

Can you tell us a little about your running history and how the Curve treadmill has made you a “born-again runner?”
I used to run 20/25 miles a week, basically hurting everywhere!! Lower back issues, joints, flabby back side and all that comes with running only. The Curve is an amazing alternative to running outdoors as it pushes the entire back part of our gluts and legs. I’ve never experienced a back pain since starting SH.
I now run half the mileage I used to run at SH (hence preserving my back and joints) but am burning more total calories and have finally achieved a much firmer hind and hamstrings than ever. The Megaformer really pushes those legs, and yes I’ll sometimes wake up with a healthy pain in my muscles, but never anything I can’t shake off the next day. Added plus is a perfectly air-conditioned environment all year round with cold water and towels always available.

Your restaurant is frequented by SH employees and members alike. What is in season right now and on the menu (and drink menu!) that you would suggest for someone watching their diet?
Funny thing to talk about. I believe in carbs more than ever, pasta is an amazing resource for exercising, it’s our fuel!! We only use unbleached, non GMO imported flours for our dishes and we grow all our greens thanks to amazing farms like Mcmullan Family farms. Our pasta is filled with great cheeses and veggies, while our fresh cuts are always prepared with farm grown produce that is only an added bonus to our diet. We also pay particular attention to our many salads and veggie platters, we always choose the best possible produce that’s available and seasonal.
As for drinks, our wines are only Italian, we spent months choosing the best of the best, and we serve even the simplest white wine by the glass at optimum temperature, something we are very proud of.

SH just like Storico Fresco is one big big family. When I go to SH I know every instructor by first name just like they know mine, they are always jumping in to correct me when I’m doing something wrong in the sweetest of ways. It’s no joke when we all talk about going to “the House” for our workouts, it truly is a second home full of people who really care about what they are doing and how they are bettering the everyday life of their guests. Being neighbors is the ultimate mega perk. We all exercise in order to feel and look better but also to be able to eat and drink great food all year round…. And one cannot go without the other!

Member Spotlight: Jon Glass

SculptHouse member, Jon Glass, has lost 35 pounds over the past year by making big lifestyle changes and incorporating the SculptHouse method into his workout routine!! The proof is in the results and we want you to hear from him directly. Jon was helping us perfect the SH method in our early days of training exactly one year ago and we can’t thank him enough for all he has done for us (including building our studio cubbies!). We are so excited to bring you his story – meet, Jon Glass:

How did you hear about SculptHouse?

I heard about SculptHouse through Megan Armstrong, the Creative Director and Lead Trainer. I had started training with Megan to lose weight and get in shape when she became a personal trainer a year and a half ago. I was working out with her when she accepted the SculptHouse job and I was certainly intrigued so she took me in to their training space last year and needless to say I got my butt kicked the first time I tried it, but loved it.

It’s no secret that you have really shaped up and your body has totally changed over the past year and a half…how has the SculptHouse method played a part in your transformation?

The SculptHouse method has without question played a major role in how my body has changed. The combination of the Megaformer and the Woodway Curve is deadly and winning! The Megaformer has allowed me to work slow twitch muscles which helped me effectively burn fat and create long lasting lean muscle. The Woodway Curve blocks provide an intense cardio workout that burns 30% more calories on a human powered treadmill. Having to pull almost 80 pounds with each step pushes the body even more than a normal treadmill. I’ve also found that after training on the curve that I can run faster and longer on a regular treadmill or outside. Every SculptHouse class leaves me covered in sweat and tired but wanting more especially when you can start feeling the positive effects after just your first class. I’ve been able to burn quite a bit of fat, create lean muscle mass and really get into cardio shape. Now exercising almost daily is part of my routine and has become a bit of an (healthy!) addiction. The SculptHouse method also has taught me to move slower and more intentionally even when exercising outside of the House.

What would you tell another guy interested in trying SculptHouse but thinking “it’s just for women?”

Try it! Don’t put it down or judge it until you man-up and step into the House! SH is absolutely not just for women, it’s for men both young and old and it’s no joke. Guys can experience real changes of their strength and bodies with SculptHouse, as each workout has variations and ways to continue to challenge and push harder.

How is SculptHouse different from other group classes you’ve tried?

SH is like no other class, a few members call it “death by machine” but the truth is that the pain may be temporary but the results are real and worth it. CardioSculpt & StrengthSculpt both provide temporary pain for long lasting results. Classes are very focused and well led. The class size is small and intimate which means that participants get a lot of personal attention and motivation. This helps to ensure that they get the most of their workout while using proper form and techniques so their bodies are protected. The squad of instructors that Katherine & Megan have assembled are also second to none. All have been extensively trained and re-trained so they can be the best!

You travel A LOT for your job. How do you stay on track when you’re on the road?

Staying on track while on the road is not the easiest endeavor – actually traveling a lot is one of the easiest ways to get off track. While traveling, it’s important to continue to exercise and eat well. Eating well and with portion control is hard but with good discipline and after time becomes easy and you begin to crave healthy eating. Exercising while on the road is also important, this is just as hard. While on the road it’s hard to create consistent routine to exercise so the challenge is carving out the time as you plan your days. Often it requires getting up earlier to get a workout in before the day gets started or even exercising in the evening. Of course, not every city has a SculptHouse or great boutique studios therefore I’ve had to use techniques and theories from SculptHouse to exercise. For example, if a hotel has a treadmill you can put yourself through SH cardio blocks (while maybe adding a few in). Also when in new cities one great way to explore and learn a city is map a running route from your hotel or wherever you’re staying. MindBody and google are also great resources for searching and finding studios that may offer training of some kind in multiple cities. Many studios offer a first class free or at a discounted rate so you can try new workouts. Honestly though, having spent so much time with the well trained team at SculptHouse, I’ve found myself critiquing and comparing other studios to SH. SH is still far and above just about anything out there. Another technique is to purchase some exercise bands for cheap as they are easy to travel with in an effort to perform some basic exercises and continue to stretch. (Just make sure you go slow).

What is your favorite M3 move? Favorite Curve block?

“Favorite” move is an odd phrase! All the moves are brutal so it’s hard to have a favorite but if I had to pick one that I think is most effective, it’d be the reverse side crunch with an inchworm. My favorite curve block is 60 builds without question. Usually by the third one, I want to stop but you aren’t done so it’s time to find that extra energy and keep pushing.

Ever shop in the boutique?

I do occasionally shop in the boutique, not to the extent that most of the ladies do, but they have men’s wear as well. The Rhone line is really great. The clothes are lightweight, breathable and most importantly very comfortable plus they really hold up and last to be worn while working out or just around town.

Anything else you want to add?

Getting in shape takes more than just showing up to workout. The SculptHouse method is incredibly effective when that’s your goal, but it’s also important to get educated on what you need to do outside of the studio. It takes discipline, good eating, portion control and holistically taking care of yourself. The instructors and team at SculptHouse are all incredibly knowledgeable and well versed in how to treat your body when you’re not getting worked at the House!

Trainer Spotlight: Brady Weeks

Meet SculptHouse trainer, Brady Weeks! Brady’s love of music, people and fitness shines in every class she teaches and Brady can thank her mom for exposing her to the fitness circuit early on. Growing up in Illinois, Brady’s mom used to take Brady to all of her favorite group fitness classes. Later in life, Brady solidified this love by studying exercise science at Ole Miss then furthering her qualifications by becoming a certified NASM trainer and group fitness instructor.

You have taught other types of group fitness classes here in Atlanta. What makes SculptHouse’s workout so different and effective?
SculptHouse’s signature workout, CardioSculpt, is so damn effective because it works both your slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers in just 50 minutes! There is no other studio within ATL that has challenged my body in that way. I also love that it is a HIGH intensity workout that is also LOW IMPACT!!! This workout really is for ANYONE!

What is your favorite type of music to play during your classes at The House?
I love to keep my clients guessing when it comes to music. I have tons of workout playlists and I also have a reservoir of songs that I’m really lovin’ at the moment. I dig all sorts of genres and enjoy reading the vibe in my classes to know what to play next. I love to throw people off with a good throw back jam to lighten the mood during those ALL OUT intervals! I completely understand and believe in the POWER of a FAB playlist! 

What is your favorite Megaformer move and why?
Hmm….this is a hard question because there are so many awesome moves out there! I LOVE LOVE LOVE working my glutes, so if I can only pick one move I would pick Spider Kicks. You can feel that move working deep into your booty! It is just so different than any move I have ever done in previous workouts. I also love how it challenges my flexibility!

What is your favorite block to do on the Curve?
As CRAZY as it sounds, I LOVE 45’s. They are so hard and such a pain in the ass but that is exactly what I enjoy about them. 45’s always challenge both my mind and body. 

At the House, each instructor has a bin to keep whatever they need to teach. What’s in your bin? What’s in your gym bag when you work out?
Inside my bin…LOL!!! I have a print out of almost every single workout I have ever taught at SculptHouse (and at this point it is pretty outrageous, but I just cleaned it out last week)! I also have a stick of Carmex cherry flavored chapstick and always gum. In my gym bag, you will find hairspray, headbands, BLONDE bobby pins (I’m really neurotic about my bobby pins being blonde), Acure Organics clarifying glycolic and zinc face towelettes, and last but not least SoapWalla’s balancing facial toning mist found inside the amazing SH boutique! I am literally obsessed with the toning mist. It cools you off and is super refreshing after a sweaty class!

Where can we find you when you’re not at The House?
When I am not a The House, I am sure to be found somewhere outside with my pup Waffles. I love taking small excursions with him to find the coolest new trails that turn into lakes, rivers, or streams for him to play in and for me to get some zen time in. I LOVE WATER!!!!

Best part about being part of the SculptSquad??
The coolest/my most favorite part of being on TheSquad is the ability to deliver an extremely unique, badass, and effective workout to ATL. I completely believed in Katherine’s vision from the first meeting I had with her. To give clients a high intensity AND low impact workout really is just so rad!! I was also super excited about the opportunity to work under our lead trainer Megan. Knowing what a badass she was made me realize that she would help push me way outside of my comfort zone and challenge me in more ways than one as a trainer. And finally, I really love the team of women our leaders have put together and developed. Each trainer is so very different, but the glue that holds us all together is that every member of TheSquad is constantly pushing themselves to the next level in all aspects of life inside and outside of the studio. We are all very courageous and understand that the most fulfilled lives are created when stepping outside of your comfort zone!

Thanks, B! Your hard work and dedication to SculptHouse has been prominent since months before we even opened. Thank you for being such an integral part of SH and for bringing positive energy each time you step through the front doors! You are so loved by us all.

Member Spotlight: WeddingSculpt Couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Noel

SculptHouse is excited to feature our first ever WeddingSculpt couple! Bryce and Mallory (formerly Meissner) attended our free classes the very first weekend SculptHouse opened in January. From there, they were hooked and signed up for our WeddingSculpt package which SculptHouse offers to a future bride, groom or couple who are planning to get married within 3-9 months at a discounted rate. We are so excited to be a little part of Bryce and Mallory’s big day and feel honored that we were able to help them get their bodies ready for the most important day of their lives! They wed on July 16, 2016 but before they said “We do,” they sat down with us to answer some questions.

How did you hear about SculptHouse?

B: From Mallory, we came together during the opening week
M: Alex invited me to one of the training sessions before Sculpthouse officially opened

We almost always see you next to each other on the Curves…is it safe to say you are a little competitive with each other?
B: Absolutely, it pushes us to work harder during each class and to do advanced options of exercises.
M: We are always competing in class. Half way through the Curve portion of class we are comparing who has run further and burned the most calories

Bryce, what can you say to other guys who have heard about SculptHouse but are hesitant to try it?
I’ve worked out throughout my life including weight lifting, Insanity, P90X and played sports and these are the toughest workouts I’ve ever done.

What physical changes have you noticed the most from the SH method?
B: I’ve noticed significant changes in my legs and shoulders and can see more definition overall.
M: Pretty much everywhere! My abs and obliques are much more defined and my arms and legs are more toned and leaner!

What has been the best part of your SH experience as you have shared your workouts together?
B: Seeing the progression of the process together. We have come so far from our first class `in January. Back then we struggled to get through the workouts but now we can push ourselves to be better each class.
M: Getting to do something challenging together on a regular basis. We compete during class but at the same time motivate each other and that makes the class fun.

Favorite M3 move? Favorite Curve block?
B: French Twist (it’s the best oblique exercise I’ve ever done); 60 builds
M: Sexy Back (My arms start to shake immediately); Active Recovery ☺ followed closely by Hi-Lo because it has built in active recovery

Mallory, you won the Curve challenge in March holding a 13.8mph speed for 5 seconds. What would you tell someone trying to increase their level 4?
The higher up on the tread of the Curve you can get, the faster you can go. Also, stay on the balls of your feet to move your legs faster.

How did SculptHouse help get you ready for your big day?
B: Getting in better shape and gaining confidence in how I look and feel.
M: I’ve developed long, lean muscles and I feel like my arms are much more toned. I’m so excited that we are starting this next chapter in our lives healthier and stronger.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to a couple who just got engaged and are looking to feel their best on their wedding day?
B: Invest in the Wedding Sculpt package. We had planned to go 2-3 times a week and found ourselves going about 4 times a week.
M: The great thing about SculptHouse is that the workout is so effective. I’ve seen results in the last 6 months that I’ve spent years trying to achieve with other workouts. It’s also a great bonding experience and a way to spend more time with your significant other by working out together.

Who spends more $$ in the SH boutique?
B: Me, I love the Rhone shirts and shorts
M: Bryce, pretty sure half of my winnings from the Curve Challenge went to purchasing Rhone items for him.

Anything else you want to add about the SH method, instructors or boutique?
B: Over the past 6 months, I’ve taken every instructors’ class and they have all been great workouts and everyone is extremely nice and helpful. They also push you to do better each class then you did at the last.
M: It really feels like a family at Sculpthouse. The instructors know who you are, your fitness goals and how to motivate you to do your best. I’m always excited to come to class because of the excellent atmosphere and exceptional effort of everyone there to make the experience for you the best it can be.

A huge thanks to both of you for being SculptHouse members from the very beginning and allowing us to be part of your wedding journey! We are so grateful to have you as part of the SH family and can’t wait to see what the future holds as a married couple. Congratulations!!

SculptHouse would like to introduce you to Ashleigh Overly! Ashleigh has been a member since day one and she brightens up the studio on a daily basis! She always finds time each week to fit in StrengthSculpt and CardioSculpt classes whether it’s early morning 6am classes, late night or even 8am on Saturdays. Ashleigh’s dedication and consistency is paying off with results and we want you to hear from her first hand:

How did you hear about SculptHouse?
I started noticing several instructors that I really liked & fellow fitness aficionados posting on social media about a new concept that was being developed in Buckhead. I kept my eye on their Instagram and Facebook posts and knew I had to try it out as soon as it opened.

How is SculptHouse different than any other workout?
The combination of the M3 strength training and the self powered Curve provides for a really unique and joint friendly (!!!!) workout. I also love that it is broken into consumable blocks – 25 minutes on each apparatus and then on the Curves, 4 blocks of 5 minutes. Dividing the workout into those sections helps me power through on those days where I’m lacking a little motivation…

The community that has developed there is the best. I love the crew that has assembled in the 6am and the Saturday 8am classes. You get to know everyone and cheer on their success in class and in life. Plus it gives some accountability – I know Jon G will be giving me a hard time if I say I’ll be in class at 6am and then hit the $25 snooze button.

What results have you seen? How often do you go?
The core strength that you develop from the M3 is absolutely insane. I can see it impact my ability to do moves on the megaformer – all those dreaded bear plank to pike wheelbarrow combos eventually become a little less daunting. The improved core and oblique strength has helped reduce a lot of back pain and helped my running stride and posture as well.

In my best laid plans I’d get to the House 5 times a week but life happens and I’m usually there 4 days per week; three CardioSculpt classes and at least one StrengthSculpt class.

What is your favorite Megaformer move and why?
I love pretty much anything that involves arms and upper body – serve the platter, chest openers, kneeling overhead tricep press.

Anything involving a bear that dances is sure to get a dirty look shot at the instructor – we need SculptHouse shirts that say “sorry for the mean things I thought about you when we were in giant reverse twisted bear!”

Favorite Curve block?
Active recovery.

Just kidding – 60 second builds are easily my favorite interval and speed block and the best way to get my heart rate juiced.

What would you say to someone who is nervous to try their first class?
Come give it a try! Know that it will be humbling and overwhelming until you get a few classes under your belt and can learn the moves. Commit to yourself to going at least twice to really experience the class and come in with an open mind. Know that when you find yourself improving and doing moves you couldn’t do before you’ll feel like you can take over the world. Every single instructor is incredibly warm and highly energetic. Trust that they’ll take care of you and provide a really fun experience if you don’t get too much in your own head.

What is your favorite type of music to Sculpt to?
Katherine had a Beyonce “Lemonade” themed class that resulted in me trying to karaoke and express lunge at the same time – I do not recommend this. The jams were amazing though despite my lack of coordination. All the music at the House is really great and the instructors do a great job keeping playlists fresh.

Do you spend much time in the boutique?
I love browsing the boutique and checking out the new brands and styling of the gear. I’ll usually set a goal of number of classes I want to attend at the beginning of the month and if I hit that I’ll reward myself with something new and fun in the SculptHouse boutique – !

Every day is Green At SculptHouse with Human-Powered Machines

Although you may have not thought about it, SculptHouse’s workouts are completely GREEN! Both the M3 Megaformer and the Woodway Curve Treadmill are completely human-powered, making the workout not only earth-friendly but more effective for calorie and fat burn!

SculptHouse has the newest version of the Megaformer machine called the “M3.” The M3 is a strength training machine that uses a spring system to control resistance on hundreds of muscles in each move. Exercises are done slowly and with control to work the slow twitch muscle fibers. You are in total control of moving the machine and its unstable “carriage” surface. The carriage moves back and forth between the front and back platform, using the springs to pull or push against resistance. The resistance comes from choosing a number of spring combinations, ranging from around 5-180 lbs. This machine combines strength training with stability, core, flexibility, balance and cardio training all at the same time.

Unlike most treadmills, our treadmills are NOT plugged into a wall. The Woodway Curve is a human-powered, curved cardio machine that is endorsed by the NFL for its low-impact design and materials that provide an unparalleled cardio experience. Because there is no motor, you are in control of your speeds. There is no max speed on the Curve! When trying the Curve for the first time, you will feel the difference in the machine and the muscles you are using right away. Speeds, distance and calorie burn isn’t the same as a regular treadmill since you have to make it go. More muscles have to work since it relies on you! When we developed our method, we decided to build the Curve workout on Levels of exertion instead of speeds to make it a more personalized workout – making our CardioSculpt classes beneficial to walkers, joggers, runners and people of all ages and abilities.

SculptHouse: A Multidimensional Workout Regimen Under One Roof

About 3 years ago, a professor from Skidmore College’s Health and Exercise Sciences Department conducted a research study to “provide a better alternative to so many extreme exercise/fitness routines…that are too confusing and/or too excessive for most people to comply with.” Dr. Paul J. Arciero studied 3 different groups of people and found that the group that followed a “multimode routine” which included resistance training, interval sprint exercises, stretching and endurance training showed the greatest health improvements, “including the greatest reductions in body weight, total and abdominal fat mass…and the greatest increase in percentage of lean body mass.” Dr. Arciero basically came to the conclusion that greater results are seen when people focus on quality of exercise versus quantity.

The PRISE lifestyle program was born from this study – “a regimen of mixed exercise modes and sufficient daily protein for optimal health and fitness.” PRISE stands for:
“P” = protein (20-30 grams of healthy, lean protein about 4-6 times a day)
“R” = resistance exercise
“I” = interval exercise
“S” = stretching exercise
“E” = Endurance exercise
But who has the time to do all of these types of workouts 3-5 times a week?? Enter: SculptHouse.

At SculptHouse, we have taken this PRISE lifestyle program and incorporated everything (well…besides the protein!) under one roof in a short 50-minute workout. You no longer need to spin or run for an hour a day, plus lift weights and add in yoga for stretching. You can literally get all the benefits of these types of workouts during our CardioSculpt classes.

CardioSculpt is our signature class that combines 25 minutes of resistance training on the Megaformer with 25 minutes of interval training on the Woodway Curve Treadmill. The Megaformer is more than just resistance, however. Every move that is done on the Megaformer works slow twitch muscle fibers – the endurance fibers that burn fat and create long, lean muscles all while moving slowly and stretching the same muscles that are being worked using constant tension. It’s like getting 3 benefits on one machine and because the movements are done slowly and with intense control, the Megaformer is much kinder to your body and joints. Then comes the Woodway Curve – a human powered treadmill that is built on a slight incline using a slat belt system. Just 25 minutes of interval training on this cardio machine is all you need to elevate the heart rate and burn fat throughout your day because this machine burns up to 30% more calories than any other treadmill. And what’s even better, is that the design of the Curve is much better for your ankles, knees and hips than a traditional treadmill or doing intervals on a solid surface – just ask the NFL as they have used the Curve treadmill to rehab several of their million dollar employees because it is much gentler on your body.

Dr. Arciero stated in the PRISE article from DUKE Medicine in September, 2014, that “your exercise regimen needs to encompass as much of what makes you a fully integrated living person as possible. It’s very difficult to just lift weights, or only do the treadmill or the elliptical machine, and be healthy.” Well, I couldn’t agree more. It’s no secret that just one year ago I was teaching 12-14 spin classes a week. I was actually gaining weight and my body had lost any sort of tone it once had. I was literally doing too much of one thing but did not have the energy (after teaching 2-3 times a day) or time to lift or do the necessary cross training to get my body in the shape I so deeply desired. Recently, I have been asked by several people about my weight loss and body transformation. I can honestly say it is all thanks to SculptHouse and the combination classes we offer. I work out less during the week but the workouts I do are smarter and more effective in that they combine everything I need in a shorter period of time. This combined with plenty of protein has made a huge difference in my physical appearance as well as my energy levels.

What Makes The SH Method Different From Any Other Method in The World?

In August 2015, I was officially hired as the Creative Director and Lead Trainer of SculptHouse. After my initial meeting with the founder & CEO, Katherine Mason, I knew she was on to something with her idea to combine strength training and cardio using human powered machines. Although we were excited to create a class where the M3 Megaformer and Woodway Curve were used together in 50 minutes, (we are the only studio in the world to combine them!) we had our work cut out for us! You might be wondering what these machines are all about…don’t worry I will give you the low-down!

The M3 Megaformer is the latest version of the Lagree Fitness machines. Although it is often confused with the pilates reformer, these machines are far from the same! With a few months of trial and error in building the SculptHouse method (and lots of advise and input from fellow fitness professionals—thanks guys!) we developed SculptHouse’s signature workout, the CardioSculpt class! We also found our own flair with the typical 50 minute Lagree class style, which we call StrengthSculpt!

CardioSculpt combines an intense 25-minute strength workout on the M3 followed by 25 minutes of cardio blocks on the Curve. During the Megaformer we focus on targeting specific muscle groups on certain days of the week. For example – Mondays and Thursday will primarily focus on the core and muscles above the core (chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps, lats). Tuesdays and Fridays will primarily focus on the core and muscles below the core (glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves). Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays will be an intense but quick full-body workout on the M3 using exercises that recruit several muscle groups at the same time.

The Cardio portion of the class is based on Levels of exertion versus speed or change in incline. This allows each person to get a personalized workout and accommodates all fitness levels so that walkers, joggers and runners feel empowered during their SculptHouse workout. The 25 minutes on the Curve are broken down into 5 minute blocks with active recoveries.

StrengthSculpt is a 50-minute full body workout on the M3. The workout will sculpt biceps, triceps, shoulders, chest, back, lats, obliques, glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves with a heavy emphasis on the core. StrengthSculpt is based on the traditional Lagree Fitness method classes on the Megaformer.

CurveCore is a shorter version of our signature CardioSculpt class, a quick 30-minute lunchtime burn combining 25-minutes of the Cruve with 5-minutes of intense core work on the Megaformer!
